If you have built a few custom Gems in Gemini and gotten used to them, Google is about to move your furniture around. Gems are being retired, and a new feature called Skills is taking their place. Google set out the plan on September 30, and the switch does not happen in one go. It is spread across several months, with different dates depending on whether you use a personal account, a work account, or a school account.
The reassuring part first: nobody loses their saved setup overnight. Google says your existing Gems will be moved into Skills automatically when your turn comes. The catch is in the details. After the switchover date for your account type, any Gem you have not dealt with becomes a draft Skill, and a draft does nothing until you switch it on. So the dates are worth knowing. Here is what changes, when it changes, and what to check before each deadline.
What Are Gemini Skills?
Skills are saved sets of instructions that you can call up inside any Gemini chat. With a Gem, you opened a separate little assistant and started a fresh conversation inside it. With a Skill, you stay where you are. You type a forward slash in the prompt box, pick the skill you want from the list, and Gemini applies those instructions to the chat you are already in.
Google pitches Skills as a way to automate repetitive tasks with Skills you write once and reuse. The examples Google gives are everyday ones:
- A skill that outlines your slides, drafts talking points, and helps you prepare for hard questions before a presentation
- A skill that matches your writing style when you draft emails or documents
- A skill that hands you three to five different viewpoints on a topic when you are stuck on a decision
You do not have to write every skill from a blank page, either. Gemini can help you build one out of a chat you have already had, and it can run a skill on its own when it spots a request that matches. Skills can also carry reference files, such as plain text documents, PDFs, and images, so the same source material gets used every time the skill runs. For anyone who has been pasting the same long instructions into chat after chat, that is the itch this feature scratches.
How Skills Differ From Gems
Gems arrived in 2024 as small, single-purpose versions of Gemini. You gave one a job, maybe uploaded a few files, and then you went back to that Gem whenever you wanted that job done. Each Gem lived on its own. If you wanted your house writing style applied while a research Gem dug into a topic, you had to pick one or the other. You could not run both at once.
Skills drop that limit. They are building blocks of guidance rather than standalone assistants, and you can stack several of them in a single conversation. A writing style skill can run alongside a brand guidelines skill, so the reply follows both sets of rules at the same time. That is the heart of the change: one chat, several saved instruction sets, combined as the task needs. It is a small shift on the surface, but it changes how people will organize their saved prompts. Instead of one big Gem that tries to cover everything, you can keep small, focused skills and mix them per job.

The Deadline Calendar: Who Changes and When
Google is not throwing one big switch. The move happens by account type, and the gaps between the dates are wide. Here is the schedule as it stands:
| Date | What happens | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| October 5, 2026 | Skills start rolling out to Google Workspace customers, with the rollout expected to finish by mid-November | Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education accounts |
| October 13, 2026 | Skills arrive in the Gemini app | Personal Google accounts |
| November 17, 2026 | Gems move to a Settings panel in the app, and personal-account Gems begin migrating to Skills | Personal accounts first |
| March 1, 2027 | Gem support ends for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts | Work accounts |
| June 1, 2027 | Gem support ends for Workspace education accounts | Schools and universities |
The full timeline, including the Workspace rollout dates, is covered in WebProNews' report on the Gemini overhaul. One extra detail rides along with the November date: Opal, Google's experiment for building mini apps inside Gemini, shuts down at the same time.
What Happens to the Gems You Already Built

This is the part most people actually care about. When Gem support ends for your account type, the Gems still sitting in your account do not get wiped. Google converts whatever is left into draft Skills automatically. They land in your account switched off, and you have to open each one, give it a quick check, and activate it before it will run again.
That is a softer landing than a hard deletion, but it is not a free pass either. A draft Skill does nothing until you turn it on. So the weekly report formatter, the tone checker, the meeting-notes summarizer you rely on without thinking — all of them will sit quietly doing nothing until you reactivate them. If your workplace runs Workspace Studio flows with "Ask a Gem" steps in them, those steps break when Gems disappear from your account. Flows like that need to be rebuilt around Skills before your deadline, not after it.
There is also a quieter risk. Automatic conversion is a best-effort move. If a Gem leaned on files or sharing settings that Skills do not handle yet, the converted draft may not behave exactly like the original. The only way to know is to test it, and testing is much easier while the original Gem still works and you can compare the two side by side.
What Skills Cannot Do Yet
Skills are ahead of Gems on flexibility, but they are not finished. Google has been open about that. A few familiar Gem abilities are still on the way in the weeks after launch:
- Sharing a skill with other people, the way you can share a Gem today
- Attaching files straight from Google Drive
- Bringing in notebooks from Gemini Notebook
Until those land, a Gem that depends on shared access or Drive files may not map neatly onto a Skill on day one. That is worth keeping in mind before you tidy anything up by hand. Deleting a Gem early because a Skill exists could leave a gap that the Skill cannot fill yet.
What You Should Do Before Your Deadline
You do not need to do everything today. You just need to do it before the date that applies to your account. A simple pass looks like this:
- List the Gems you actually use, and write down what each one does in a line or two
- Save a plain-text copy of each Gem's instructions somewhere outside Gemini, so you always have the wording
- Once Skills reach your account, rebuild your most-used Gem as a Skill and compare the output with the original
- If you manage a Workspace team, check for "Ask a Gem" steps in Workspace Studio flows and plan their replacements
- After your migration date passes, open your Skills list and switch on the drafts you still need
The bigger picture is worth a glance too. Skills are part of a wider push to give Gemini more reach across your apps, files, and accounts. Our explainer on Gemini Full Access permission looks at what that wider access unlocks and where the risks sit, if you want to see where this is all heading.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do Gemini Gems stop working?
It depends on the account. Personal accounts start losing Gems in November 2026, with Gems moving to a Settings panel on November 17. Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts keep them until March 1, 2027, and education accounts until June 1, 2027.
Will my existing Gems be deleted?
No. When support ends for your account type, any Gem you have not converted yourself is turned into a draft Skill automatically. You will need to open each draft and activate it before it works again.
How do I use a Skill in a chat?
Type a forward slash in the prompt box and choose the skill you want from the list. Gemini can also apply a skill on its own when it sees a matching request, and you can run more than one skill in the same conversation.
Can Skills do everything Gems could?
Not quite yet. Sharing skills with others, attaching Google Drive files, and using Gemini Notebook notebooks are still rolling out in the weeks after launch. The core job — saved, reusable instructions — carries over, and stacking skills is something Gems never offered.
What happens to Workspace flows that use Gems?
Flows in Workspace Studio that include an "Ask a Gem" step will break once Gems are removed from your account type. Rebuild those flows around Skills before your deadline so nothing stops without warning.

My Personal Take
Google is moving your furniture around again — classic. But underneath the renaming, Skills sounds like the more capable idea: assistants that act, not just custom chatbots that chat. If that's real, the migration is worth it. Still, I understand the fatigue. Every Google pivot asks users to rebuild, and the company's track record makes 'invest deeply in the new thing' feel like risky advice.
My practical take: if you've built Gems you rely on, don't wait for the forced migration — start rebuilding the important ones as Skills now, on your own schedule. And keep your core prompts saved as plain text somewhere outside Google's ecosystem. Whatever the feature is called next year, a good prompt is a good prompt. That's the part no rebrand can take from you.
